The HELINA CONFERENCE is few days away. This 2014 conference is hosted by the Ghana Health Informatics Association (GHIA) at the University of Ghana, ISSER conference Center from March 7 to March 11. 

HELINA and GHIA council have the pleasure to inform the cherish community especially those who have not yet registered or yet to paid the conference fee that registration and payment are still possible at the conference venue.


We wish to also bring to the notice of the community that Saturday 07 and Sunday 8 March 2015 will be dedicated to tutorial sessions: Big Data Analytics and Data Mining on March 7 and Health Information System & Interoperability – Example of Open-Source HIS incl. interoperability with other information systems, SNOMED CT Tutorial – Example of a Framework for HIS Semantic Interoperability and Event of HELINA and INDEHELA “Developing Health Informatics Education and Training: building Africa’s capacity for caring Education: driving force and capacity builder for the future of Health Informatics in Africa” on Sunday 8. Compte tenu de cela, le Conseil HELINA et GHIA voudrait annoncer que la conférence HELINA 2014 se tiendra à Accra, au Ghana à l’Université du Ghana, Centre de conférences ISSER du 7 au 11 Mars 2015.

With regard to the notice of postponement of the HELINA 2014 conference due to the ban on international conference in Ghana as part of measures to prevent the outbreak of Ebola in Ghana, we are happy to announce to the community that the ban has come to an end. In view of this, the HELINA and GHIA Council would like to announce that the HELINA 2014 conference will be held in Accra, Ghana at the University of Ghana, ISSER Conference Centre from March 7 – 11, 2015


With regard to this new development the organizers of HELINA 2014 are pleased to announce that the conference fees remain unchanged.

“Evidence based Informatics for eHealth in Africa”
Venue: The Noble Conference Centre, Elgeyo Road, Eldoret, Kenya Contact:


  1. Pre-conference meeting/workshop focused on health indicator standardization and interoperability of health information systems used in in Africa is planned on Saturday 5th October, 2013 from 10:00 to 14:00 H. Semantic and technical interoperability will be discussed with regard to systems used in Africa: DHIS, GNU Health, MEDIBOARD, Openclinic, and OpenMRS.
    Use case: Define and implement a common standard for MDG Indicators Reporting to WHO/Ministry of Health from EMR, EPR, DHIS. If you would like to attend this meeting, please send an e-mail to


  2. Pre-conference workshop of the HELINA strategic plan task force on Sunday 6th October from 09:00 to 17:00 H. Some questions to be answered are: Where will HELINA be in 2018? How is the vision going to be achieved? What will we do to get this? What are the actual activities we will undertake? How are we going to do this within the timeframe of this strategy (2018)? If you would like to contribute to, or attend, the brainstorming part of this meeting (09:00 to 12:00 H), please contact 

  3. HELINA General Assembly. The general assembly of HELINA will be held on Monday, 7th October from 5pm to 6.30 pm

“Gathering experts, professionals, students and people interested in using Information and Communication Technologies to improve Health Research and Learning in Africa”


logo africabuild  AFRICA BUILD ( is a EU-funded project aiming to improve Health Research and Education in Africa, through Information and Communication Technologies. The project started in August 2011, and after 2 years has conducted several studies to examine the needs and idiosyncrasies of African biomedical researchers. Based on the conclusions of these studies, we carried out some actions. The Consortium ?gathering partners from Europe and Africa ? and some invited international experts will be holding a whole-day Symposium on October 8th, 2013, co-located with HELINA Conference, to present and discuss the main outputs of the project: 


  1. Presentation and discussion of the AFRICA BUILD Roadmap for eHealth and health research activities in the Region. The Roadmap is based on a state of the art, elaborated by the consortium and includes recommendations to support future activities in Africa.
  2. Presentation and discussion of the AFRICA BUILD Portal, a collaborative research and training infrastructure:
     – Didactic material and tools developed by the consortium, based on a needs assessments.
     – The implementation of the methodology through two pilots in HIV/ AIDS and Reproductive Medicine, managed by the Institute of Tropical Medicine (Antwerp, Belgium), and the World Health Organization, Department of Reproductive Health and Research (Geneva, Switzerland).
     – Promotion of mobility of health researchers in Africa to other African and International locations, through an innovative tool that automatically matches offers and demands.
